Yesterday I wrote about the progress in solar cell technology and the excellent prospects for the future of this renewable green energy, today comes the news from MIT has made a breakthrough in that the other aspect of providing Solar energy, the means to store it when the sun doesn't shine.
Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) researchers have hit upon a simple, inexpensive, highly efficient process for storing solar energy. Anne Trafton of MIT reports on the innovation:
"The key component in Nocera and Kanan's new process is a new catalyst that produces oxygen gas from water; another catalyst produces valuable hydrogen gas. The new catalyst consists of cobalt metal, phosphate and an electrode, placed in water. When electricity -- whether from a photovoltaic cell, a wind turbine or any other source -- runs through the electrode, the cobalt and phosphate form a thin film on the electrode, and oxygen gas is produced.
Commander Samuel Vimes will always have worse problems than me
Terry Pratchett is a magnificent author. He is one of a rare species of writer who is able to immerse the reader in a world so very different to our own yet so delightfully similar. His characters are so brilliantly executed that you would want to meet them in the middle of the street and treat them with your eyes struck by stars. Detritus would accidentally fire his crossbow, Granny Weatherwax would frown disapprovingly at you and Vimes would arrest you for trespassing. However, the characters are so set, yet so variable that each novel will grab you by the metaphorical balls and keep you hooked until its disappointing end. Disappointing, because I don't want it to end.

I have been especially hard on Sen. John McCain for his pro-death stance on embryonic stem cell research, and I will continue to be until he changes. But does he now have a reason to change his mind (and heart)? Time magazine features potential scientific breakthroughs in reprogramming adult stem cells. Here's an excerpt:
America’s slide in world prominence is causing a national malaise; we grow more anxiety-ridden and worried about our futures by the day. Tom Bloch, the former CEO of H&R Block who left his corporate career to become an inner city teacher, says we need to stop the negativity and start getting serious about the education of all of our nation’s children.
TUCSON, July 31 (UPI) -- Scientists confirmed Thursday that water, considered an essential building block of life, does indeed exist on the planet Mars.An analysis of a soil sample collected by the Phoenix lander detected traces of water, which exists as ice just below the red soil on the Martian surface.
The Intel (formerly Westinghouse) Science Talent Search is on us again. The 40 finalists from around the country gathered in Washington D.C. on March 11 to take part in the distribution of $1.25 million in scholarships and prizes.
The Talent Search is the most prestigious pre-college science and technology competition in the United States and its contestants will soon fill the campuses of some of America's finest universities. Each finalist received an Intel Core 2 Duo processor laptop and a scholarship of at least $5,000, with the winner receiving a scholarship for $100,000.
Most of the entries fall under the chemistry, biology, and, increasingly, social science categories, and the winner will probably be a project based on a multi-syllable concept that most of the world cannot understand. However, five finalists submitted entries that are of particular interest to the inventing world.<!--more-->
