Palin Knows More About Energy Than Anyone In America

Sarah Palin: "Alaska produces 20% of all US domestic energy."
FactCheck.org: "Umm...yeah... We're going to need you to go ahead and change that to 3.5%. M'Kay? That would be terrific..."

Sooner or later it reaches a point where it doesn't matter whether she's lying or stupid.  Either way, she's just not up for the job.  Apparently they love her in Alaska...for fuck sakes, let them keep her.  But don't drag this creationist imbecile down here and inflict her on the whole world as some sort of election ploy.  That's not right.

The Politics of Science

Sorry, this post may seem off topic, but bear with me. There is a point.

As a child of the 60s, I've learned to cover my ears or change the channel whenever a professional politician, staffer, strategist, mouthpiece or pundit opens his/her mouth. I know they will say that they are right, the other side is wrong, and all I have to do is trust them to change my life for the better.

Thanks to NASA, Mr. Wizard, and some really great science teachers, I grew up believing that scientists may disagree with their colleagues or conventional scientific wisdom, but they will prove or disprove their own hypotheses with experiments and reason, not posturing and rhetoric.

Scientists seek the truth, politicians seek power, compromise and self-survival.

Still my favorite science video on the web

Dear Robert D. Deegan, Florian S. Merkt, and Harry L. Swinney-

You guys rock.

Sincerely,

Ian

Ah, So This is How Science Should Be Taught

This is simply brilliant.

“Easterbunnyism, Fatherchristmasism or the contemporary militant Tooth Fairy jihadist movement are best seen by science teachers not as a misconception but as a world view. This is more valuable than simply banging on about ‘reality.’ Reality-based thinking is vastly overrated and certainly won’t prepare children for a career in the City or in government.”

Carry on.

We Want Real CHANGE! Change Is An Action Word Not A McCain Talking Point

OVER the years, I’ve been deeply moved by the people who’ve told me they wished they could feel inspired and hopeful about America the way people did when my father was president. This sense is even more profound today. That is why I am supporting a presidential candidate in the Democratic primaries, Barack Obama.

Maybe we'll kill off ALL the fish. The above image is from this article, which has more information.

Timelessness

Many believe that technology simply gets better over time: that every class of invention can improve endlessly into modernity. That is not so. Most of the hard constraints on technology are imposed by physical or mathematical laws. These remain constant. Those who truly understand this may work, instead of towards the solution of individual problems, towards timelessness, and the ideal platonic form.
