Carnival of Space 70

It is here folks, the carnival of space! I haven't kept track of this for quiet a time, but I promise I will, K? :) So, here it is, in a website named Orbital Hub.

Science-Making/Myth-Making

A quote from the beginning of Kuhn's Structure:

The more carefully [historians of science] study, say, Aristotelian dynamics, . . . the more certain they feel that those once current views of nature were, as a whole, neither less scientific nor more the product of human idiosyncrasy than those current today. If these out-of-date beliefs are to be called myths, then myths can be produced by the same sorts of methods and held for the same sorts of reasons that now lead to scientific knowledge. If on the other hand, they are to be called science, then science has included bodies of belief quite incompatible with the ones we hold today. Given these alternatives, the historian must choose the latter. (2)

It's so hot...

...that I if I should die I'd shrivel up within a day so the people who'll find me will think that I've been dead for almost 100 years. I mean, seriously. I want a more temperate climate! I also should add that I've had a horrible day today involving one gigantic deathmarch errand throughout the entire down for one fucking stamp on a documents for which I had to cough up $100!

Sarah Palin: "Jerry Falwell with a pretty face."

It doesn't get any worse than that, my god.

Rev. Howard Bess, an American Baptist minister from Palmer, just down the road from Wasilla, AK, knows a lot about Sarah Palin:

"She will take our message to the world!" rejoiced an Assembly of God youth ministry leader, as the church band rocked the high-vaulted wooden building with its electric gospel.

That is what scares the Rev. Howard Bess. A retired American Baptist minister who pastors a small congregation in nearby Palmer, Wasilla's twin town in Alaska's Matanuska Valley,

"She scares me," said Bess. "She's Jerry Falwell with a pretty face.

"At this point, people in this country don't grasp what this person is all about. The key to understanding Sarah Palin is understanding her radical theology."

Cool! Check These Out 10

First, two news items from NEWS.BBC.CO.uk: The discovery of a new exoplanet circling a sun-like star, and then, a skeptical issue of the World Wide Web, with Warning sounded on web's future, a way needs to be found to help separate rumor from real science. Here's a second skeptical issue, at CNN.com, on one of many answers to the question: What's the harm of believing in superstition? 'Witchcraft claim sparks deadly soccer riot in Kinshasa.' 'nuff said!

Atlantic Tropical Weather Update 9/15/08

All the major storms in the Atlantic basin have dissipated.  August and September have been very busy and the news has been terrible as far as hurricane-related news goes.  Louisiana is still cleaning up from Hurricane Gustav, which wasn't as bad as it could have been.  Texas and Louisiana are beginning the cleanup from Hurricane Ike, which also wasn't as bad as it could have been.  Islands in the Atlantic are cleaning up from all of the above and more.  Cuba, the Bahamas, and Haiti are only a few of the major areas affected by the storms in the Atlantic so far this season.  That's part of the story: the season is a long way from being over.  September 10th is the climatological average date of the peak of the season.  We might have passed by the hump, but the western Atlantic, the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico still have waters warm enough to support tropical storm development.  But for now, things are quiet.

WhatIWantMost: ASP.NET AJAX RTM broke my UpdatePane

A few days ago I noticed that something was amiss with the My Wishlist page of the WhatIWantMost.com site. At the time I was working on something else so I ignored it and I returned this evening to take a closer look. I have these floating divs that are displayed for adding/editing items in your wishlist. All the functionality for showing and hiding them is done server side, but through the magic of the UpdatePanel it's all done in with AJAX. I didn't know if the UpdatePanel would work because of...

Church of England apologizes to Charles Darwin

The Rev. Malcolm Brown, the head of the Church of England's public affairs department, has said that the Church owes Charles Darwin an apology, "for misunderstanding you and, by getting our first reaction wrong, encouraging others to misunderstand you still." He said that in a larger essay, "Good religion needs good science," which itself if part of an excellent series of articles and essays, found at here, on Darwin that the Church of England is releasing in advance of 2009, which is both the bicentennial of the scientist's birth and the 150th anniversary of the first publication of On the Origin of Species.

Google to set sail in an unexpected manner

[caption id="attachment_57" align="alignleft" width="81" caption="Google Sea Datacenter"]Google's Sea Datacenter[/caption]

Seems people at Google are desperate to find new ways to save energy / money and to reduce pollution. They have recently filed a patent that shows us how a datacenter in the middle of the sea would be feasible.

Using cold water to cool down the servers and wave movement to generate electricity, this would mean that the datacenters could be self sufficient.

I have to ask: ''Why not add some solar panels to that?''

Managing Ads

I'm sure that you know that I have some Google Adsense ads on this site. I don't use them too much here because I don't want them to be too obtrusive, but I figure if the couple of dollars that they provide a month will pay for this site's hosting then I'm at least not losing money. Google says that I cannot tell you to click on them, but I will say that when I visit the sites of other bloggers and I see an ad that looks like something I might be interested in I will click through. In building the...
