[caption id="attachment_152" align="alignright" width="229" caption="Bloodletting"] I am amused by the babblings of many political bloggers and commentators fuming against certain political candidates who believe the Biblical account of creation. The argument usually goes along the line of "how can we trust someone who doesn't believe in science?" or something similar. The assumption is made that all scientists agree on the origen of the universe and all that is in it. Of course, that is blatantly false. As new discoveries are made, "science" is always changing. "O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoid profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called: Which some professing have erred concerning the faith." The Apostle Paul, First Epistle to Timothy ch. 3 vs. 20,21 (KJV) What is Science? When we think about science, we should think about the meaning of the word. Basically, it means knowledge or the pursuit of knowledge. Because our knowledge is imperfect, our "science" is always changing. What we thought we knew yesterday, is often proven wrong today or tomorrow. Consider the following:
Throughout all of history, God's Word has not changed. (Regardless of what we have been told by those who are uneducated about the Bible and yet hold a bias against its teachings, it never says the earth is flat or that the earth is the center of the solar sytem. Those were assumptions made by imperfect men, the "scientists" of their day, and promoted by religious authorites at the time. The true scientists who challenged the prevailing thought were persecuted). But through it all, the Bible remains trustworthy and has never been proven wrong. Darwin's ideas about evolution were proven wrong by modern genetic studies. No doubt, many of the present ideas will also be proven wrong in the future. Scienctists should continue to explore, learning from newly discovered knowledge, and discarding previous beliefs that have been disproven. But to somehow think that "science" is the holder of all truth is absolutely foolish. |
