What? What's the topic? Oh, that.

First Contact -- this is the first contact with an alien species. It's the first contact with a different culture. It's the name of a Star Trek movie. It's the name of an enormous number of science fiction/fantasy books.

Here's the thing. Until people are able to comfortably get along with others of our own species however different they are, until we can respectfully recognize the sentience of other species on our own planet, how in the world will we ever be able to get along with a totally alien species? Whoever they might be (presuming they're a they), they are not likely to speak a language we can understand nor will they likely even think in the same manner that we do. They more than likely will not look anything like a mammal even. breath the same air. consume sustenance as we do. eliminate waste. what if they don't eliminate waste? what if what comes in is completely consumed by the organism and to them waste is an appalling concept? what if they only take what they can use completely?

well. so, that is the off topic topic for today.
